(A) It happened in the middle of a night when I was eight years old. I was sleeping in my bed. But when I shifted onto my right side to check the time on my clock, I saw (a) a man crouching next to my bed. He had dark blue skin, and his blue eyes seemed to be reflecting a lot of light as if the moon had been shining on him. And his hair was the darkest shade of black I've ever seen.

(B) The next morning, I asked my dad if he remembered me calling him the night before, but he said no. I told him about what had happened, but he thought it had been just a silly dream. But it couldn't have been a dream because (b) he was wearing the same pajamas he had worn that night when he came to turn on the lights in my room.

(C) I didn't know what to think and what to do. He didn't move, nor did he blink. (c) He just stared at me, so all I could do to escape his penetrating eyes was close my eyes, call out to my dad, and cover my face with my blanket. I dared not turn to the other side of the bed in fear that (d) he'd be there, too.

(D) After a while, my dad came into my room and asked me what was wrong. When I opened my eyes to answer, however, I couldn't find (e) the man. My dad checked if there was anything strange, but everything in my room was exactly how it was. He returned to his room assuring me that there was nothing strange in my room.

(A) Susan was waiting for her train on the platform with her friend, Michael. He wanted her to take a half of a sandwich (a) he had left over from dinner. She told him she didn't want it, but he kept insisting through the course of their conversation. Susan and Michael lived in different directions and her train came in first, so she said goodnight to him and got on the train and sat down.

(B) When the nearly empty train was one stop before her station, a homeless man came through the door of the adjoining car. He was very dirty and *mumbling to himself. As he neared her, she could see his eyes were very wild-looking. (b) He came towards her and without a word grabbed her by the right jacket sleeve. She was terrified. His face started to get closer to hers, when all of a sudden she remembered the sandwich in her bag.

(C) Quickly she asked him, "Are you hungry?" He nodded furiously. She pulled out the half sandwich (c) her friend had tossed to her and gave it to him. Then he let go of her and proceeded to the next car. Ten seconds later she pulled into her stop and she ran off the train as fast as she could. The doors closed and the train took off.

(D) Just before the doors closed, (d) he called her name. Susan looked up, and before she knew it he threw the sandwich at her. It landed in her lap. At the same moment the doors closed and the train began to move. She saw him smiling on the platform. She made a face at (e) him and put the sandwich in her bag. *mumble 중얼거리다

(A) Some years ago a newspaper headline told of three hundred whales that suddenly died. The whales were pursuing sardines and found themselves isolated in a bay. Frederick Harris commented, "The small fish lured the sea giants to their death. They came to their violent end by chasing small things, by wasting vast powers for insignificant goals." We are all like the whales when we try to spend our time doing second things first. Often the little things in life trip us up. When little priorities demand too much of us, big problems arise.

(B) Their question was this: Had the landing gear actually not deployed, or was it just (a) the light bulb that was defective? To begin with, the flight engineer held the light bulb. He tried to remove it, but it wouldn't budge. Another member of the crew tried to help out, and then another. By and by, (b) all eyes were on the little light bulb that refused to be dislodged from its socket.

(C) A tragic example is an Eastern Airlines jumbo jet that crashed in the Everglades of Florida. The plane was the now-famous Flight 401, bound for Miami from New York City with a load of holiday passengers. As the huge aircraft approached the Miami Airport for its landing, a light that indicates proper deployment of the landing gear failed to come on. The plane flew in a large, looping circle over (c) the swamps of the Everglades while the cockpit crew checked out the light failure.

(D) As they struggled with the bulb, no one noticed that the plane was losing altitude. Finally, it dropped right into a swamp. Many were killed in that plane crash. While (d) an experienced crew of high-priced and seasoned pilots messed around with a seventy-five-cent light bulb, an entire airplane and many of (e) its passengers were lost. The crew momentarily forgot the most basic of all rules of the air "Don't forget to fly the airplane!"

(A) You might have heard the old expression "go with the flow." It has to do with supporting popular thinking. Many people look for safety and security in popular thinking. They figure that if a lot of people are doing something, then it must be right. If most people accept it, then it probably represents fairness, equality, compassion, and sensitivity, right? Not necessarily. The problem with popular thinking is that it doesn't require you to think at all. The bottom line is that it always brings so-so results. When I was a student in a German gymnasium and thirteen years old, I learned a valuable lesson about popular thinking that I have never forgotten.

(B) The teacher showed him how to adjust the focus, and that student finally said he could see the planet, and the moons. One by one, the students stepped up to the telescope and saw what they were supposed to see. Then the second to the last student looked into the telescope. But, to our dismay, the student standing just before me - his name was Harter - announced that he could not see anything. "You idiot," shouted the teacher, "you have to (a) adjust the lenses."

(C) The student tried, but said, after a while, "I do not see anything. It is all black." The teacher, disgusted, then looked through the telescope himself. After some seconds he looked up with a strange expression on his face. The lens cap still covered the telescope. The teacher had forgotten to (b) remove the lens cap. None of these students had been able to observe anything with the lens cap on, but they continued to (c) pretend to see the beautiful heavenly body.

(D) One early morning our physics teacher placed a telescope in the school yard to (d) show us a certain planet and its moons. So we stood in a long line, about forty of us. I was eager to (e) observe how beautiful the heavenly body was. But I was standing at the end of the line, since I was one of the smallest students. The first student stepped up to the telescope. He looked through it, but when the teacher asked if he could see anything, the boy said no; his nearsightedness hampered his view.

I had always thought I __(A)__ cats. There was no special reason. Never owned one, never fed strays, just avoided petting them. Then one rainy spring day, a patchwork-colored cat came around. I was about to shoo her away, but she looked so miserable that I felt sorry for her. The least I could do was leave her some food. She kept coming back for more, and I got to pet her. Patches, I called her.

It wasn't long before another cat showed up, gray with a white chest. I named her Fluffy. Soon she had a black kitten, Midnight. Then two lovely white angoras came around, Pete and Repeat. "What are we running, a cat sanctuary?" Hap, my husband, grumbled. But I couldn't turn them away. I liked caring for them. I started to worry about what would happen to them in cold weather and asked Hap what we should do. He didn't say much.

Then on a cool fall day, driving home, I was still wondering what to do about my cats in the cold winter. My cats! I pulled into the driveway, and saw the most __(B)__ sight. If I rewound my life-tape 25 years, I could see myself standing beside my Shetland pony. My mother helped me get my left foot into a stirrup and swung me up. In an instant I sat on (a) the best birthday present I ever had. My father saw me standing at the gate of the pasture, arms folded across his chest. It was a moment of breathless joy touched with unimagined terror. Actually, there was no way I could control the big and impatient pony, even though at six I was older than the pony by three years. My father saw my uncertainty and spoke calmly to both me and (b) Prince, which I had named him in my imagination long before I ever dreamed such a wondrous animal would actually come into my life.

For weeks I did little more than follow the fence around the pasture. He was not a calm creature, and my parents would not let me ride alone. But each time I circled the field, I faced (c) a dangerous temptation. My dad had built a jump at the far side of the riding track. I knew it could not have been built for me, but for the grownups. But each time I rode past it, I planned to take (d) such a big animal over it someday in order to show I'd already grown up and I wasn't a kid anymore. That was the most daring idea I'd ever had.

Then, one Saturday, I saw that my father was watching me go around the ring. I decided to risk it. When I felt (e) my adventurous steed gather himself to make the leap I required of him, I closed my eyes. It was the only way I could manage to do it at all. After what seemed an oddly long time in the air, I felt his forefeet hit the earth. To my astonishment, I was still in the saddle as I circled around and stopped where my dad stood leaning against the rail. He patted Prince on the neck and slapped me on the thigh. He said to me, "Good deal! I'm so proud of you" "But remember! You're the most precious to me. Please, be careful!" he added.

[17~18] 두 사람의 대립된 의견을 읽고, 물음에 답하시오.

Person A Children should not be held legally responsible for their actions, nor should they be obligated to provide for themselves until they become legal adults. Governments have established laws drawing distinctions between adults and juveniles for a reason. These governments believe that juveniles make mistakes and are not necessarily prepared to be fully responsible for their actions. Parents, and the community at large have a responsibility to raise children to act appropriately in society. If society, or more specifically, parents fail in the task, it is not reasonable for the children to suffer sole responsibility for these acts.

Person B While generally true, there are instances where the influence of parents over a child's life is probably not realistic. Some children run away from home or forcibly separate themselves from their parents on their own accord. On occasion, juveniles commit crimes so horrifying, and so unexpected, that no reasonable person would think that the parents were ultimately responsible. There are also significant differences between cultures as to what age constitutes "adulthood" While many western countries consider an 18-year-old an adult, other cultures see the onset of adulthood as being much earlier. The arrival of adulthood can also be regarded as a continuum of increasing responsibility, as in many countries the age of legal adulthood varies, with differing ages set for leaving school, getting married without parental permission, joining the armed forces, driving, drinking, and voting.

17. 위 두 글의 핵심 쟁점으로 가장 적절한 것은?

influence of cultural diversity on illegal behavior of children

[19~20] 두 사람의 대립된 의견을 읽고, 물음에 답하시오.

Person A False identification may be reduced where identity cards are required to open a bank account. Any additional checks on identity which is critical to financial accounts and transactions would be beneficial. Technologically-enhanced ID cards would make forgery much more difficult. Modern technology can allow cards to be developed which include mapping of unique biometric features of their owner. The biometric features include fingerprints and *retinal scans, which make forging very difficult and a stolen card useless. Key-holding devices for the ID card as a key can use biometrics only for accessing the set of keys inside, limiting risk of privacy leakage. Those biometrics need not be transmitted across huge, legally and technologically different networks; so, the risk of biometric data leakage can be limited to the key-holding device.

Person B Single or integrative ID cards hold greater incentives for forgery than separate access cards. Unmanageably, the more important and apparently forgery-proof a card is, the greater the incentive for criminals to find ways to forge them. If cards become widely used and widely trusted, then the rewards for anyone who can find a way to fake them are potentially huge. Governments do not have a monopoly upon electronic research, and digital information can be hacked into and altered, so there can never be such a thing as a crime-proof card. No country has ever successfully produced a totally unforgeable ID card. Therefore, any increase in ID cards would create greater vulnerabilities to identity theft and fraud.

19. 위 두 글의 핵심 쟁점으로 가장 적절한 것은?

how to reduce false identification at banks

necessity of technology to prevent counterfeit money

ID cards and technology to control forgery

privacy leakage with technologically-enhanced ID cards

Person A About two hundred years ago, an English poet by the name of William Wordsworth wrote that "we murder to dissect." He meant that in order to study and analyze a living thing, first we have to kill it. Some people feel that what Wordsworth said applies to more than what goes on in a laboratory. They think that Wordsworth, as a poet, saw a poem as a living thing. And they worry that to analyze a poem - to study (a) it in detail, to look closely at specific lines and words - is to dissect the poem, which would mean, unfortunately, to take all the life out of (b) it. I feel that poetry is something you should read and write not with your mind but with your heart. In other words, poetry is ________.

Person B Suppose you're analyzing a poem. Does that mean you've murdered it to dissect (c) it? No, not if you don't go overboard. Instead, it means that you are being respectful to the poet. You are acknowledging that he didn't just slap any old words down on a page but carefully chose and arranged certain words, just as a painter would carefully choose certain paints or a furniture maker would carefully choose the right pieces of wood - or just as you would carefully choose exactly the words you want in writing a poem of your own. You'll find that you can enjoy many poems even more if you look at the craft that went into making them. You might even find that this kind of study, far from killing a poem, breathes life into (d) it, because (e) it brings you closer to the poet who shaped its words.

(A) I received a letter from a woman who lives in New York. She explained that her 22-yearold electrician son Joe went to Manhattan a few days after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. He wanted to volunteer his time, but discovered that his skills were not needed.

(B) He talked his pain out, as much as possible. And Joe, for that time at least, helped him carry his unbelievably heavy burden. That day Joe did not give blood, nor did (a) he use his electrical skills to help with the relief effort. But he did one of the most important things a human can do for another. (b) He gave a disheartened man his whole attention, and immeasurably assisted in the work of setting the world right. Mary Lou Casey says, "What people really need is a good listening-to." Now more than ever.

(C) Then the man began to talk and Joe listened. He talked about the smell of soot from the burning debris. Joe listened. (c) He talked about cleaning debris from a face. And as he listened, he did not *flinch. (d) He did not react in disgust. He did not judge. He did not interrupt. Through it all Joe quietly held the man's attention and listened, which is exactly what the rescue worker needed at that moment. And because he listened, the man continued to speak.

(D) Joe may have helped in a way he never anticipated, for on the train home, he sat across from a weary fire fighter covered in what appeared to be "ground zero" dirt and debris. Though (e) he could see bits of rock in the man's hair and noticed that his hands were bloody, what shocked the young man most was the look in the fire fighter's eyes. They appeared lifeless and dull.

They headed out past a place they called Big Island and skated most of the afternoon. On the way they passed over a large crack in the ice, which appeared each year, so they did not think much of it.

(B) Weary and shivering, (a) he watched as one by one his friends began to run to the village to seek help. Grasping at the ice one last time, he saw the last of his three friends turn to leave. Tom sank beneath the cold waters. He could feel his life slipping away from him. Looking up he saw only darkness, having lost sight of the hole in the ice. (b) He realized he was going to die. Reaching up he grabbed the ice and it held. He could see his last friend just within earshot and he yelled for him to help. (d) He came back and held out his coat and dragged him to safety.

(D) As the daylight started to fade, the four teenagers headed back to the village. When they came to the crack in the ice, Tom's three friends crossed carefully over the crack, but Tom held back. Yelling to his friends to watch, he skated with all his might and leaped over the crack, but as he landed the ice broke underneath him. Suddenly he was in the frozen lake. (e) He looked up and swam toward the hole through which he had fallen. Grasping at the ice, he yelled to his friends for help. Person A Liberal democracy relies upon direct participation by individuals. From this point of view, our democracy is endangered by a lack of participation. The resolution of such a crisis may in a small way restrict some personal liberties, but it is in the interests of society as a whole. We compel people to wear seat belts when riding in a vehicle. _____, we should not be afraid to do the same in case of voting. Low participation rates are doubly dangerous. They mean our politicians are not representative of the population as a whole. Also, since the poor and disadvantaged are far less likely to vote than any other group, they can easily be ignored by mainstream politicians.

Person B There are many reasons why people do not vote. Many people cannot get away from work, or find someone to look after their children. Some cannot physically get to a polling booth, and others are simply not interested in politics. None of them can be affected by forcing people to vote. Those who cannot will continue not to, and those who are not interested will vote randomly or for minority candidates. Their absentation from voting should be regarded as a democratic right. The right to free speech is complemented by the right to silence. _____, the right to vote should be balanced by the right to absentation.

Person A: Organic farming does have its advantages. It conserves water and soil resources, recycles animal waste, releases fewer chemicals, improves soil fertility, and protects farm workers, livestock, and wildlife from potentially harmful pesticides. However, organic foods are not any safer than conventional foods. Since organic foods are grown with manure, there is a greater risk of bacterial contamination. Animal waste is used as a fertilizer instead of synthetic chemicals on organic foods, and this animal waste may contain dangerous bacteria such as salmonella or E. coli. These microorganisms can cause illness and even death. Yet people are still willing to spend nearly twice as much on organic foods. If you want to buy foods that are more environmentally friendly, then organic foods would be a good choice; but if you are looking for immediate __________________ benefits, save your money.

Person B: The way that some of our food is grown is a cause for concern. Many conventional farmers use synthetic chemicals, antibiotics, and growth hormones to grow our food. However, organic farmers don't. Organic foods clearly have much lower levels of synthetic agricultural chemical residues such as artificial pesticides and herbicides. Organic farmers are not allowed to use synthetic pesticides or fertilizers. All kinds of agricultural products are produced organically. Organic produce contains significantly lower levels of pesticide residues than conventional produce. It is a common misconception that organic foods could be at greater risk of E. coli contamination because of raw manure application, Organic standards set strict guidelines on manure use in organic farming.

Too often, the side effects of conventional medicine can be as dangerous as the disease it supposedly fights (for instance, chemotherapy). Person A: What is actually needed is to spend more time in preventing crime through policing strategy rather than focusing on responding to crimes that already happened. Nor does arming the police offer a solution to fundamental socio-political issues which contribute to crime. Routinely arming the police is an uneven response to gun crime, as it will affect some sections of the community more badly than others. For example, as certain ethnic groups are often associated with particular types of criminality, police use of firearms will damage police credibility within the communities, which feel that they are the victims of too much police suspicion. Even though the police believe they are carrying weapons in self-defense, the ethnic people will view it as an aggressive act.

Person B: There is a global trend that the number of people who own guns is increasing, and even it's true in countries which did not traditionally think of themselves as having a large criminal gun culture such as Great Britain. This increases the risks to frontline police officers of being the victims of gun crime. Police officers should have a right to protect themselves. Fewer officers might die on duty if they were better able to protect themselves. Arming the police is essentially a matter of self-defense rather than being actively involved in regular firearm incidents. This is shown by the fact that most routinely-armed police never fire their weapon on duty in their whole career.

Person A: We censor all of our media for the interests of society as a whole, and the Internet is no different. Freedom of speech is not an absolute but a right that our society gives us; when, however, freedom of speech conflicts with another individual's right to privacy, quality of life or even life itself, censorship is not only justified but a duty of any society. For example, racist and terrorist propaganda and harmful sites on the Interact should be censored. Besides, the particular nature of the Internet adds to the dangers there has never been a more efficient mechanism for the mass distribution of the most deadly material. The potential for danger is huge if left uncontrolled. For example, *encryption, whereby information is encoded by the sender and can only be decoded by the intended recipient, is proving a handy tool for terrorist cells across the world. Therefore, our governments should _______________ in an effort to protect our community.

*encryption : 부호 매김

Person B: Censorship of any form is dangerous, and open to misuse. We can certainly censor our country's media, but the Internet is a different, genuinely worldwide phenomenon. The right to speak is valid only if someone else has the right to disagree so if we allow a wealth of beneficial information to be transmitted, we must also allow minority of immorality. Besides, encryption, by its nature, is also the tool for many advances in human rights the only method that people under repressive regimes have to communicate with the outside world. It is also invaluable for safeguarding credit card details and other private information. In brief, the global nature of the Internet renders any individual country's efforts to censor it meaningless. If something is banned in Britain, then a computer user can access it by a different route in the Netherlands. China has had to relax its restrictions because of their ineffectiveness.

(A) Long ago, there lived a King who was never content with his life. One day, he saw one servant singing with a very content look on his face. The King asked why he was so happy. The man replied: "Your Majesty, I am nothing but a servant, but I make enough money to keep my family happy. I am happy because my family is happy." Hearing this, the King summoned his Personal Assistant to ask why he was not content with all the riches and luxuries unlike the servant.

(B) When the servant found and opened the bag at his doorstep, he let out a great big shout of joy. He then began to count the coins and realized that there were 99 coins. He counted again for he thought it would be 100 coins. But he came to the same conclusion. Finally, he decided to work harder to make up for that 1 gold coin. However, he began to shout at the children and his wife and never smiled. He didn't seem to be content with his life anymore.

(C) The Personal Assistant listened attentively and said "Your Majesty, I believe that the servant has not been made pan of the 99 Club." "What is the 99 Club?" the King inquired. The assistant replied, "Your Majesty, to truly know that, place 99 gold coins in a bag and leave it at this servant's doorstep." That very same evening, the King did as he had been told.

(D) Seeing the man's attitude change so drastically, the King was puzzled. The assistant said, "Your Majesty, the servant has now officially joined the 99 Club. The 99 Club is just a name given to those who have everything but are never content, therefore they are always working hard for that extra 1. We have so much to be thankful for, but on being given something better, we want even more and don't realize the price we pay for it. We lose our happiness and hurt the people around us. That is what the 99 Club is doing."

On October 13, 2005, the Vancouver Whitecaps soccer club submitted a conceptual proposal to the City of Vancouver to construct a new soccer stadium above a portion of the rail yard along the northern edge of Gastown. The stadium is proposed to have a capacity of 15,000 seats initially, with potential for future expansion up to 30,000 seats. The facility is intended to accommodate Whitecaps men's and women's soccer games, other sporting events, and non-sporting events (e.g. concerts, festivals).

(A) The Whitecaps soccer club has done much for our city, while advancing the global game of soccer to people of all genders, races, social, and economic backgrounds. I believe the new stadium would have significant benefits for the enhancement and enrichment of our culture.

(B) Today, I attended the public hearing regarding the proposed soccer stadium project and was impressed with the quality of the discussion. The Whitecaps' plan looks very promising and exciting. But embracing change is always difficult. I'm worried that a massive increase in taxes will be needed to build the stadium.

(C) If I were the referee of a soccer game, I would give the Whitecaps soccer club a yellow card. Before they start their project, they should remember that for almost120 years Canadian Pacific Railway has been part of the cultural heritage of this great nation. Any planning of this rail land should be done carefully.

(D) Some Gastown business owners and environmental groups express serious concerns about the proposed stadium. I think these special interest groups are another form of bureaucracy that stands in the way of progress. The government should not bend to the wishes of the loud minority. It should focus on the wishes of the silent majority.

(E) I occasionally go to Seattle to watch baseball games and spend my cash at businesses in the area. Why wouldn't the businesses in Gastown be in favor of bringing in 15,000 or so people downtown, many of whom might not be down there otherwise? Wake up, business people! This is what makes your town thrive!

(A) On top of this, our society reinforces these traits by the system it has created to produce athletes. For those successful enough to rise to the level of big-time college sports, the "reward" is often an artificially controlled social environment, one that shields them from many of the responsibilities other students face. Coaches whose own jobs, of course, depend on maintaining winning programs protect their athletes to ensure that nothing threatens their ability to compete. If an athlete gets into trouble with the law, for instance, a coach will very likely (a)[criticize / intervene] hiring an attorney, perhaps even managing to have the case quietly dismissed. In some schools, athletes don't even choose their own classes or buy their own books; the athletic department does all this for them.

(B) It is not difficult to understand our desire for athletes to be heroes. On the surface, at least, athletes display many classical qualities of heroes. And sports do allow us to witness acts that can truly be described as courageous, thrilling, beautiful, and even noble. Yet there's something strange here. The qualities a society looks for in heroes selflessness, social consciousness, and the like are precisely the (b)[same / opposite] of those needed to transform a talented but otherwise unremarkable neighborhood kid into a Michael Jordan. To become a star athlete, you have to have an extremely competitive personality and you have to be totally focused on the development of your own physical skills. These qualities may well make a great athlete, but they don't necessarily make a great person.

(C) Given this situation, it's not too surprising that many young American athletes lack a fully developed understanding of right and wrong. Professor Sharon Stoll of the University of Idaho has tested more than 10,000 student athletes from all over the country; she reports that in the area of (c)[morality / mobility], athletes invariably score lower than non-athletes and that they grow worse the longer they participate in athletics. Overprotected by universities, flattered by local communities, given star status by the public, rewarded with seven or eight-figure salaries, successful athletes inevitably develop the feeling that they are privileged beings as indeed they are. The danger arises when they think that because they are privileged they can have anything they want.

Person A: When you carefully choose a house you can afford, the outcome can be significant. By paying your *mortgage, you are building *equity in a place of your own. Equity is the portion of the property that you actually own. Equity increases by paying your monthly payments, and your home may also appreciate in value over time. Also, as a homeowner, you can deduct from your income taxes the amount of mortgage interest and real estate taxes you pay each year. It's often said once an owner, always an owner. A first home often leads to a better second home. Owning and properly maintaining the property also offers a sense of accomplishment. Last but not least, long-term home ownership can provide beneficial retirement security through the growth of equity.

*mortgage : 융자, 대부금, 담보

*equity : 지분, 재산의 순수 가격

Person B: Being a homeowner is usually more costly than renting. Mortgage payments are generally higher than rent, and include the added costs of home repairs and maintenance. As an owner, you must pay for any unexpected costs such as a new roof or heating system. In addition, property values can drop, depending on the neighborhood in which you live. When you own a home and fail to keep up with your mortgage payments, the mortgage lender could call the loan, which means payment in full or "foreclosure on the mortgage. This could result in the loss of your home as well as the equity you've built. Also, owning a home usually makes moving difficult and complicated. After you purchase a home, you may not have as much flexibility in choosing a new location to live or work.

(A) Once upon a time there was a king who had three daughters. They were all good and beautiful, so he did not know which one he should appoint as queen. As his birthday approached he summoned his daughters and said, "My dear children, for a long time I have not known which one of you I should name to be the heir to my throne. I have now decided that the one of you shall become queen who brings me a birthday present that is most necessary in human life. Go and make your plans with utmost diligence."

(B) They quickly ran for the cook. "Why did you forget to salt my favorite dish, you careless girl?'' snapped the king at her. The cook answered. "You drove away your youngest daughter because she thought that salt was so necessary. Perhaps you can now see that (a) your child was not so wrong." When the king heard these words he recognized his daughter, begged her for forgiveness, and accepted her once again as his dear child. Then the wedding became doubly joyful. Now it came to pass that (b) one of the princesses was getting married, and the famous cook was assigned the preparation of the wedding feast. (D) The old king's birthday arrived, and the two oldest daughters brought him presents that were very necessary, but at the same time extremely expensive. Person A Zoo animals are usually kept in very confined enclosures and do not behave like their wild counterparts. Polar bears, for example, are given about 10 meters of walking space, whereas in their Arctic home they roam for many hundreds of kilometers. Supporters of zoos argue that they help to conserve endangered species, but in fact they are not very good at this. Even the world famous panda breeding program has been very costly and unsuccessful. Diseases often spread between species. For example, many Asian elephants have died in US zoos after catching herpes from African elephants.

*herpes (병명) 포진

Person B In the zoo animals never run out of anything. They will always have suitable shelter, water supply, food, shade, privacy, and hygiene. Zoos are popular tourist attractions and they also make good school field trip destinations with their educational value. They help save endangered species, too. They can gather up a couple of endangered animals, breed them, and then take them back to the wild. This will prevent so many animals from becoming extinct. Zoos also help with academic research. They allow scientists to conduct scientific studies. Examining how the animals behave over a period of time is an example of this.

Person A Everybody agrees that nursery schools provide crucial social training for young children as well as preparation for academic work. However, the state already gives considerable help to families with young children, both through the welfare system and through tax credits. If free nursery education were to be a universal benefit, it would be hugely expensive. As many parents already choose to pay for nursery education, why should the state waste money giving this benefit to them free? In addition, many companies already run workplace nurseries why should the government pay them to do what they are doing already?

Person B Developmental psychology has demonstrated how crucial the early education of children is for their later progress. In other words, science has shown that nursery education should be a priority for any government. Government funding of nursery places is an investment in the future with long-term economic and social benefits. If free nursery education is not provided by the state, then only the rich will continue to provide it for their children. Those whose parents could not afford nursery education will be at an intellectual and educational disadvantage from the outset. Therefore, the state provision for nursery education is essential to ______________________________. Free nursery education will do something to redress the balance even though it will not, of course, wipe out economic differences.

(A) Lego, the Danish toy company, found instant success with their interlocking blocks in the German market. The company's management believed that one of the primary reasons for their success was the quality of the instructions they provided inside each box. The instructions helped children build the specific item that a particular box of blocks was meant to build. (a) They were quite a breakthrough in the field: precise, colorful, and refreshingly self-explanatory. If one followed the path through the instructions, tiny plastic pieces turned into a splendid work.

(B) However, their strategy ended in failure in the U.S. American children would tear into the boxes, glance quickly at the instructions if they glanced at (b) them at all, and immediately set to a construction project on their own. They seemed to be having a wonderful time, but they were as likely to build, say, a fort, as they were to build the automobile for which the blocks were intended. And when they were done, they would tear their fort apart and start over from the beginning. Once purchased, to Lego's dismay, a single box of Legos could last for years.

(C) In Germany, Lego's strategy using brilliant instructions worked exactly as intended. German children opened a box of Lego blocks, sought out the instructions, read (c) them carefully, and then sorted the pieces by color. They set to building, comparing their assembly progress with the helpful illustrations in the instruction booklet. When they were finished, they had an exact duplicate of the product shown on the cover of the box. They showed it to Mother who clapped approvingly and put the model on a shelf. Now the children needed another box.

(D) After all, Lego's success and failure had much to do with each country's culture code. Over many generations, Germans perfected bureaucracy in an effort to survive the chaos that came to them in wave after wave, so the strict order became their culture code. It is this code which makes children reach dutifully for the instructions and prevents (d) them from immediately destroying their neat construction in order to build it anew. But Lego didn't know the American culture code emphasizing freedom and creativity, so their brilliant instructions didn't work as (e) they had in Germany.

Person A Becoming able to lead a civilized and balanced life was the primary aim of education in the past. Now things have changed, and education is an investment opportunity. Once the investment is made, there should be corresponding regular returns. In this context, taking up a career fairly early is a wise idea. Since the candidates are jumping right into the job market after finishing their studies, they are at an advantage of applying the theory into practice. Also, the financial freedom they enjoy will make them more responsible, independent and motivate the youngsters around. From a professional point of view, faster career selection offers multiple opportunities for young people to identify their strengths and weaknesses. This would ultimately help them climb the upper rungs of their career.

Person B There are many young men and women who start their careers at a young age. Since they start earlier than their peers, they are likely to have a steady job and collect more money. But early financial freedom makes them ignore their parents and family. Also, quick money makes many young people irresponsible and selfish. Obsession with profession makes them neglect their social responsibilities and start to worship money and material objects. In addition, early career selection, most of the time, leads to _____________________, though there are many opportunities to pursue education while being in a career. (A) Distance running requires strength and endurance. Beginning runners are often inspired by famous athletes. The East African country of Kenya has been home to many world-class distance runners. Kipchoge Keino is one of Kenya's most remembered and respected athletes.

(B) Not wanting to forgo his chance to compete, he decided not to withdraw from Olympic competition. Only days later he won a silver medal in the 5,000-meter race. (a) He finished only two-tenths of a second behind the gold medalist. But the 1,500-meter race, Keino's third event, was the race most people wanted to see. Keino was competing against Jim Ryun, the current world-record holder from the United States. Ryun was favored to win.

(C) Keino was still in pain because of the infection on the day of the race. (b) He figured his best chance of winning would be to get off to a blazing start. He thought that if he ran far ahead at the beginning, no one, not even Ryon, could catch him. Keino's tactic worked. He got off to a very good start, sprinted, and had a long lead on Ryon. (c) He was not equal to the race. Keino captured his first Olympic gold medal with an impressive time of 3 minutes and 34.9 seconds.

(D) Keino is most remembered for his amazing performance at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City. He was set to compete in three events, but immediately before the competition (d) he experienced intense stomach pain. Keino decided to run anyway. With only three laps to go in the 10,000-meter race, Keino's first event, he suddenly collapsed. When officials rushed to his Keino struggled to his feet and finished, even though (e) he was officially out of the race. Keino later learned that he had a gallbladder infection.

Person A Foreign languages are important for the economy. Foreign language skills help companies do business with other countries. Employers value people who are able to speak more than one foreign language. The more languages someone can speak, the more places he or she can work at. Learning foreign languages will help students get good jobs when they are older. It will also increase their understanding of other cultures. It is especially important that children whose native language is not widely spoken learn other languages. And it is polite to be able to speak some of another person's language. Governments should try to promote economic growth. Since foreign languages are important for the economy, governments should make all students learn them.

Person B Foreign languages are important in modern societies, but other skills are more important to the economy. Many young students are hardly able to do simple sums or read and write in their own language. More time should be spent on these basic skills, not foreign languages. Not all workers need to know foreign languages. A student may not want a job that would need a foreign language. There is therefore no point in making every student learn them. It should be up to the individual to decide what is useful for them. It is undesirable for governments to tell students what is important for them and press them to do it. And understanding foreign cultures can also be gained in other subjects such as history and geography. It isn't always gained only by learning foreign languages.

(A) Corporations that produce genetically modified foods claim that the technology has many advantages. Crops can be made resistant to pesticides and diseases. Fruit and vegetables can be grown in poor climates or soil conditions. They even claim that fish can grow to twice their normal size at twice the speed. All these things sound great, but it is important to ask what the risks are.

(B) As a result, consumer groups demand that all genetically modified food should be labeled. In practice, however, this is not easy to achieve. It requires food producers and suppliers to separate genetically modified crops and foods from unmodified crops and foods. Many food producers and suppliers have been slow to do this because of the high costs involved. Major food corporations argue that labeling pushes up the price of products, making them unattractive to consumers.

(C) Despite these risks, genetically modified foods are entering our supermarkets at a rapid rate. A major concern is that current testing cannot detect all the possible health risks of genetic engineering. Most tests are conducted on laboratory animals for short periods of time and so do not provide adequate answers for the long-term impact on human beings. Another problem is that most of the tests are carried out by the same companies that make the products. Since it is not in the interests of these companies to find fault with their own products, _______________________________.

(D) Genetic engineering involves the joining and transferring of genes between different plants. This process can create toxic substances in our food. It can also introduce known and unknown allergens into common foods. For example, when one leading food company wanted to increase the amount of protein in their soybean, they used genes from the Brazil nut. The new product could not be sold, however, because scientists discovered that anyone who was allergic to Brazil nuts (and many people are) would also be allergic to the genetically modified beans.

Alfred Adler, a famous doctor, had an experience which illustrates this. When he was a small boy he set off with a poor start in arithmetic. His teacher got the idea that he had no ability in arithmetic and told his parents what she thought in order that they would not expect too much of him. In this way, they too developed the idea, "Isn't it too bad that Alfred can't do arithmetic?" He accepted their _____(B)_____ estimate of his ability, feeling that he was very poor at arithmetic just as they expected and that it was useless to try.

One day Adler succeeded in solving a problem which none of the other students had been able to solve. This gave him encouragement. He rejected the idea that he couldn't do arithmetic and was determined to show them that he could. His newly found self-assurance stimulated him to go at arithmetic problems with a new spirit. He now worked with interest, determination, and purpose, and he soon became extraordinarily good at arithmetic.

(A) Laurent Clerc was born in a small village near Lyons, France, in 1785. He was born hearing, but when he was one year old, he fell into a fire and lost both his hearing and his sense of smell. At the age of 12, Laurent entered the Royal Institution for the Deaf in Paris where he excelled in his studies. After he graduated, the school asked him to stay on as an assistant teacher. He was a dedicated teacher; and consequently, was promoted to teach the highest class.

(B) The two men set sail on June 18, 1816. The voyage across the Atlantic Ocean took 52 days: however, Clerc and Gallaudet put the time to good use. Clerc studied English, and Gallaudet studied sign language. They discussed the school for the deaf which they planned to open. The year after they arrived, they founded America's first school for the deaf in Harford, Connecticut.

(C) Fortunately, while he was in London, Gallaudet met a French educator of the deaf who invited him to go to Paris to learn at the Royal Institution for the Deaf, the school where Laurent Clerc was teaching. (a) He accepted the offer, and went to the Royal Institution for the Deaf, where Clerc became his Sign Language teacher. When the time came for Gallaudet to return to America, (b) he asked Clerc to come with him. Clerc accepted on one condition that (c) he would stay in America only a short time.

(D) Meanwhile, in America, Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet was studying to be a minister when (d) he learned that there were no schools for the deaf in America. He was very concerned about the lack of educational opportunities for the deaf. Therefore, in 1815, Gallaudet sailed to England to seek ideas on how to teach deaf people. However, (e) he was unable to get help and he became frustrated.

Person A If a child discovers a special talent for something, perhaps playing the piano or inventing something, it's a parent's duty to guide the child in developing it. If a child wants to perform, what is better than to give them realistic goals and help them to achieve them? Child acting can be a learning experience and a stepping stone to a career. Fortunately, lots of laws protect child actors from many hazards of the entertainment industry. For example, education is mandatory for child actors, and the hours a child actor can put into his or her unique line of work are severely limited based on age.

Person B In reality, many children acting in motion pictures or television are suffering an unstable schedule of school. And they are not around other children in a normal, social environment and constantly introduced to new, unfamiliar situations. In addition, no matter how much they are shielded from the dark side of the entertainment industry, a child actor may still be exposed to heavy subject matter that is difficult to process at a young age. Even worse, the child actors may experience negative pressures when working under tight schedules or severe competition. (A) In the 1980s, scientists around the world began to notice something strange. Frogs were disappearing. More recent research has shown that many kinds of amphibians are declining or have become extinct. They have been around for a long timeover 350 million years. Why are they dying out now?

(B) There are a number of other factors in amphibian decline. Pollution is one of them. In many industrial areas, air pollution has poisoned the rain, which then falls on ponds and kills the frogs and toads that live there. In farming areas, the heavy use of chemicals on crops has also killed off amphibians. Another factor is that air pollution has led to increased levels of ultraviolet (UV) light. This endangers amphibians, which seem to be especially sensitive to UV light.

(C) Scientists are seriously concerned about this question. They now believe that amphibian decline is due to several environmental factors. One of these factors is the destruction of habitat, the natural area where an animal lives. Amphibians are very sensitive to changes in their habitat. If they cannot find the right conditions, they will not lay their eggs. These days, as wild areas are covered with houses, roads, farms, or factories, many kinds of amphibians are no longer laying eggs.

(D) All these reasons for the disappearance of amphibians are also good reasons for more general concern. The destruction of land, the pollution of the air and the water, the changes in our atmosphere these factors affect human beings, too. Amphibians are especially sensitive to environmental change. Coal miners once used to take down a canary bird into the mines to detect poisonous gases. When the canary became ill or died, the miners knew that dangerous gases were near and their own lives were in danger. Now you can understand what the disappearance of frogs means to human beings.

When someone says, "Well, I guess I'll have to go face the music," it does not mean he is planning to go to a concert. It is something far less pleasant like being called in by your boss to explain why you did this and did that, and why you did not do this or that: _____(A)_____ music, indeed, but it has to be faced. At some time or another, every one of us has had to face the music, especially as children. We can all remember Father's angry voice: "I want to talk to you." And only because we did not obey him, what an unpleasant business it was! The phrase, "to face the music," is familiar to every American, young and old. It is at least 100 years old. And where did it come from?

The American novelist, James Fenimore Cooper, said in 1851 that the expression was first used by _____(B)_____ while waiting in the wings to go on the stage. When they got their cue to go on, they often said, "Well it's time to go face the music," and that is exactly what they did face the orchestra which was just below them. The actor might be frightened or nervous as he moved on to the stage in front of an audience that might be friendly, or perhaps hostile especially if he forgot his linesbut he had to go out. If he did not, there would be no play. So, the expression, "to face the music," came to mean having to go through something, no matter how unpleasant the experience might be, because you knew you had no choice.

Person A Cultural treasures should be displayed in the country where they originated. Egyptian mummies can be truly understood in Egyptian museums, not in British museums. Some cultural treasures like African artifacts have religious and cultural associations for the area from which they were taken, but none for those who view them in glass cases. To the descendants of their creators it is offensive to see aspects of their spirituality displayed for ________________ in the Louvre in France. Besides, art treasures in foreign countries were often acquired illegally or improperly, through stealing in war, under the threats of imperial force, or by bribing local officials to ignore the carrying away of sculptures from monuments they should guard.

*artifact 공예품

Person B Art treasures should be where they are. The most developed states are the true successors to ancient civilizations, and artifacts from great civilizations should be accessible to the greatest number of people and scholars. In practice this means retaining art treasures in the great museums of the countries ________________, where they can be compared to large numbers of objects from a wide variety of cultures. In addition, returning treasures to their original context is impossible. We cannot rewrite history; the evidence that artifacts were obtained illegally or improperly is often not clear. Instead, perfect copies could be placed in the original locations, if returning artifacts were so desired.

The Svalbard Global Seed Vault, a backup to the world's 1,400 other seed banks, was to be officially inaugurated in a ceremony on the northern rim of civilization attended by about 150 guests from 33 countries. It's been (a) a modern Noah's Ark for plant life and built to withstand an earthquake or a nuclear attack. (b) The "doomsday" vault was designed by Norway to protect the world's seeds from global catastrophe. The life storage has the capacity to store 4.5 million seed samples from around the globe, _____(A)_____ them from climate change, war, natural disasters and other threats.

Norway's government owns (c) the giant seed bank in Svalbard, a frigid island 620 miles from the North Pole. The Nordic country paid $9.1 million for construction, which took less than a year. Other countries can deposit a seed for free and reserve the right to withdraw (d) the new life giver upon need. It was about 5 degrees, but it was colder inside. Giant air conditioning units have chilled the vault to just below zero, a temperature at which experts say many seeds could survive for 1,000 years. And even if power fails and cuts off the air conditioning, (e) the frozen room keeps the seeds cold for 200 years even in the worst case climate scenario. The vault's life span is expected to _____(B)_____ that of Egypt's ancient pyramids.
